We took Jake and Abby to the Science Museum of Virginia yesterday. We knew it was for kids a bit older but thought Jake would like to see some new things. He pet a cornsnake, felt its shed skin, saw toads and frogs and lizards, made a human skeleton move, learned about the food pyramid, watched a video on the digestive system, watched a huge pendulum swing, learned a bit about DNA through a large multistory model (seen above), and got a bunch of fun things at the wonderful gift shop. Abby watched everything with big eyes from her stroller and had a big nap on the way home.
The museum itself is in an old rail station and has some very cool open spaces. Unfortunately, Jake also found one of the exhibit rooms (a big open space that had a moving astronaut seat and exhibits on electric current) too loud and echoey and got very upset about the noise level. We left shortly after that (he was also exhausted) and he has been talking about the "loud" thing at the museum ever since. He really didn't like it! He's reliving the trauma of it just like he did about 18 months ago when he threw up in his crib one night. He has to talk about it over and over to work it through. We both feel a bit bad that he had such a negative experience, but are glad that he feels comfortable talking it through with us. He talks about it especially a lot right before going to sleep.
Next time, we think we'll go back to the little kids' museum!
